The yard is on the west side of the Connecticut River in Essex, and has much history. First known as the Essex Paint and Chemical Company in the 1920s; Dyke Wetmore owned and operated a paint manufacturing and supply house until fire destroyed the first building in 1936. It was rebuilt by the Wetmore family who owned the buildings and business until 1986.

The Chandlery at Essex was originally established in 1920.
